Labor Law and Working Conditions in Germany: A Guide for Foreign Healthcare Professionals

Author: Sebastian Mohr, Your Attorney at Rekruut

Dear readers,

Welcome to another exciting chapter in the jungle of German labor law ! I am Sebastian Mohr, your experienced lawyer at Rekruut, and today we would like to turn our attention to a topic that is of central importance to professionals from abroad in the care sector: labor law and working conditions.

Employment contracts, working hours, vacation policies and labor rights – all these elements form the foundation of a fair and legally protected working environment. For our valued nursing staff from abroad, I would like to highlight five aspects in particular here:

  1. Transparency in employment contracts

An employment contract is not a closed book, but a mutual agreement that sets out the rights and obligations of both the employer and the employee. It’s critical that all terms and conditions are written down clearly and understandably. That way, you know what to expect, from working time arrangements to compensation.

  1. Be aware of working hours and breaks

Requirements for working hours and breaks can vary by state. As a nurse, it’s important to keep track of your work hours and make sure you have enough breaks to recover and be there for your patients to the best of your ability.

  1. Vacation arrangements and rest

Well-deserved time off is not just a luxury, it’s a right. Learn about leave policies that allow you to rest and recharge your batteries so you can support your patients with all your strength and dedication.

  1. Protection of labor rights

Equal pay for equal work – this is a fundamental principle in Germany. As a foreign nurse, you have the same labor rights as your local colleagues. Be aware of your rights and do not give in to unjustified demands.

  1. Seek advice and support

If you have questions or uncertainties about your working conditions, do not hesitate to contact experts. Lawyers and expert advisors can help you defend your rights and be treated fairly.

Dear nurses, it is of utmost importance that you understand your working conditions and stand up for your rights. A solid knowledge of labor law and working conditions will help you build a trusting and stable career in nursing.

Stay informed and protected!

Sincerely yours
Sebastian Mohr
